Workplace Harassment

Bullying, no matter where it occurs, is a very sensitive topic, and sadly, it is much more common than we think. It can happen anywhere, even at your job. Therefore, in this week’s blog, we will tell you how to identify harassment in a work environment, what type of harassment it could be and what to do when faced with such a situation.

Bullying not only occurs in small businesses, but it can also happen in any business and industry across the United States. This can be presented in different ways, from intimidation, ridicule, or discrimination to sexual harassment on a physical level. The easiest way to avoid or reduce this being a recurring theme in your workplace seems to be very obvious. This is having policies against bullying and reminding everyone how to handle it.

It is essential to mention that any harassment, not necessarily of the physical type, is entirely illegal within your workplace and should be reported. Indeed, you may think that if you find yourself in a similar situation, you would automatically report it without thinking, but this is not always the case. These types of problems make you feel uncomfortable and confused about what happened.

Here are some types of bullying:

  • Verbal: This consists of being offensive and receiving unnecessary criticism.
  • Psychological: It is similar to verbal, but it has exclusion tactics and does not share necessary information.
  • Digital Bullying: A way for you to be intimidated through the communication networks used in your workplace.
  • Physical violence: This can happen when someone touches your face, hair, or arm unnecessarily or you are threatened that they will physically hurt you.
  • Sexual Violence: It is reported that more than 40% of women have experienced this type of harassment in their workplace, while 12% of men have faced a similar situation.
