How do we achieve pay equality? - Hernandez Law | Attorney Tatiana Hernandez for Workers’ Rights

How do we achieve pay equality?

It is a fact that women deserve to be paid the same amount as men when they have the same jobs. But unfortunately, the gender pay gap is still present throughout the country and in all industries. So, below we want to give you some steps that we all can take toward achieving pay equality for women.

It is crucial to bring up this issue because, according to a recent study, the workforce has gone back about 30 years during the pandemic, back to 1987, to be more precise. As of February 2021, women’s participation rate in the workforce was only 55%, as many were forced out of their jobs for various reasons. The women who have been more affected by this are women of color or have low-wage jobs.

California has some of the strongest laws in the country enforcing that similar work must be rewarded in the same way. Therefore companies need to evaluate their hiring processes to ensure that women and men get paid the same regardless of race, gender, or skin color.

What can you do to make a change?

  • You must fight for your salary from the moment you start to interview for a new job. It is important to ask people in your industry how much you should expect to be paid for the role. Do not be afraid to negotiate and ask for the salary you deserve.
  • As a woman, you should be paid the same as a man with the same title. This salary should only differ if the level of experience is different.
  • The way we analyze jobs needs to be re-evaluated. How we determine a salary can no longer be based on how it has been paid historically. Instead, it needs to be based on the candidate’s skills, education, and experience.
  • Companies should bring in third-party auditors so they can re-evaluate their salary brackets.
